The History of East Carolina Pirates Football at Dowdy-Ficklen Stadium

With the College Football Season around the corner, the Pirates are ready for kick-off! The men in Purple and Gold have been playing at Dowdy-Ficklen Stadium since the early-1960’s. Speaking of Dowdy-Ficklen Stadium, the venue can hold nearly 50,000 fans in capacity. The Pirates’ football venue is a 1.5-hour drive from Raleigh (home of the NHL’s Carolina Hurricanes and the N.C. State Wolfpack). Dowdy-Ficklen Stadium is also located on the East Carolina University campus. The school’s football stadium was named after local businessman James Skinner Ficklen (who donated funds for the football venue along with the university’s contributions) and Board of Trustees member Ronald & his wife Mary Ellen Dowdy (who funded the venue’s renovations).

Since its opening, the Pirates football venue has witnessed some of the greatest college football players and coaches in history. Those players are the following: Ruffin McNeill (head coach), RB Chris Johnson, QB Shane Carden, Skip Holtz (head coach), and many more! The men in Purple and Gold last won a Conference Championship during the 2009 season. Since 2006, the Pirates have played in eight bowl games.
