Cubs Send LHP Andrew Chafin to Athletics in 3-Player Deal
Andrew Chafin, Cubs Reliever, Traded to Athletics in 3-Player Deal
Nearly two weeks after the 2021 MLB All-Star Game took place, it appears that one lucky team will be getting a star relief pitcher. MLB Network Insider Mark Feinsand first reported that the Chicago Cubs have traded Relief LHP Andrew Chafin and cash considerations to the Oakland Athletics. The Cubbies will be receiving the following in return from Oakland: Starting RHP Daniel Palencia and OF Greg Deichmann. This is just the second trade involving the Athletics over the past couple days as the team acquired OF Starling Marte from the Miami Marlins.
Why Did the Cubs Trade Andrew Chafin?
Chicago decided to trade Chafin due the team likely becoming sellers at the trade deadline (Friday, July 30). Also, the reliever will hit the free agent market following the 2021 season. In addition, there is speculation to the possibility that both 1B Anthony Rizzo and 3B Kris Bryant could be dealt by the deadline. The Cubs are currently in 4th place in the NL Central Division with a 50-52 record. Therefore, Chicago decided to trade Chafin to get something in return instead of losing them for nothing via free agency.
Why Did the Athletics Acquire Andrew Chafin?
Oakland decided to trade for Chafin to bolster its bullpen. Another reason for the acquisition is that the Athletics are looking to push for a division title against the 1st place Astros. In fact, Oakland is leading the 2nd AL Wild Card spot by 1.0 game over the Seattle Mariners. In addition, the Athletics are currently in 2nd place in the AL West Division with a 56-46 record behind Houston. With Chafin now in the fold for Oakland, the former Cubs reliever will join the bullpen consisting of the following: Closer Lou Trivino and late-innings pitcher Yusmeiro Petit.
What Was His Tenure with Chicago (NL) Like?
Andrew Chafin has spent the last one and a half seasons with the Cubs. Even though his time with North Side Chicago didn’t last long, Chafin managed to get in E.R.A. of 3.00 or below in a season in one and a half season with the team.
