Cubs Send Javier Baez to Mets in 3-Player Deal
Javier Baez, 2016 NLCS MVP, Traded to Mets in 3-Player Deal
Not long before 2021 MLB Trade Deadline (Friday, July 30) expired, it appears that one lucky team will be getting a star infielder. ESPN MLB Insider Jeff Passan first reported that the Chicago Cubs have traded INF Javier Baez and Starting RHP Trevor Williams to the New York Mets. The Cubbies will be receiving the following in return from New York: OF Pete Crow-Armstrong.
Why Did the Cubs Trade Javier Baez?
Chicago (NL) decided to trade the 2016 NLCS MVP winner due the team becoming sellers at the trade deadline. The Cubs traded 3B Kris Bryant to the Giants, 1B Anthony Rizzo to the Yankees, Closer Craig Kimbrel to the White Sox, and Reliever Andrew Chafin to the Athletics. Also, Baez will hit the free agent market following the 2021 season. The Cubs are currently in 4th place in the NL Central Division with a 51-56 record. Therefore, Chicago decided to trade Baez to get something in return instead of losing him for nothing via free agency.
Why Did the Mets Acquire Javier Baez?
New York (NL) decided to trade for Baez to bolster its offensive core. Another reason for the acquisition is that the Mets are looking to hang onto their division lead against the Phillies and the Braves. In fact, New York is leading the NL East Division spot by 3.5 games over the Philadelphia and 4.0 games over Atlanta. With Javier Baez now in the fold for the Mets, the former Cubs star will join the lineup consisting of the following: Pete Alonso, Francisco Lindor, and Michael Conforto.
What Was His Tenure with Chicago (NL) Like?
Javier Baez made his big league debut for the Cubbies in 2014. He was a two-time All-Star and won a Gold Glove along with a Silver Slugger Award in his career. In 2016, Baez won the NLCS MVP Award and guided Chicago to their first National League pennant in about 70 years. He also guided the Cubs to five playoff appearances, including the curse-ending World Series championship in 2016. For the 2021 season with Chicago, Baez compiled a 0.245 batting average with 23 home runs and 67 RBIs.
