Kris Bryant, 2015 NL MVP Winner, Traded to Giants in 3-Player Deal

Not long before 2021 MLB Trade Deadline (Friday, July 30) expired, it appears that one lucky team will be getting a star infielder. ESPN MLB Insider Jeff Passan first reported that the Chicago Cubs have traded INF Kris Bryant to the San Francisco Giants. The Cubbies will be receiving the following in return from San Francisco: Starting RHP Caleb Kilian and OF Alexander Canario.

Why Did the Cubs Trade Kris Bryant?

Chicago (NL) decided to trade the former NL MVP winner due the team becoming sellers at the trade deadline. The Cubs traded 2B Javier Baez to the Mets, 1B Anthony Rizzo to the Yankees, Closer Craig Kimbrel to the White Sox, and Reliever Andrew Chafin to the Athletics. Also, Bryant will hit the free agent market following the 2021 season. The Cubs are currently in 4th place in the NL Central Division with a 50-54 record. Therefore, Chicago decided to trade Bryant to get something in return instead of losing him for nothing via free agency.

Why Did the Giants Acquire Kris Bryant?

San Francisco decided to trade for Bryant to bolster its offensive core. Another reason for the acquisition is that the Giants are looking to hang onto their division lead against the defending World Series champion L.A. Dodgers. In fact, San Francisco is leading the NL West Division spot by 3.0 games over the Dodgers. With Kris Bryant now in the fold for the Giants, the 2015 NL MVP winner will join the lineup consisting of the following: Buster Posey, Evan Longoria, and Brandon Crawford.

What Was His Tenure with Chicago (NL) Like?

Kris Bryant made his big league debut for the Cubbies in 2015. He was a four-time All-Star and won the NL Rookie of the Year Award in his rookie campaign. One year later, Bryant won the National League MVP Award. He guided the Cubs to five playoff appearances, including the curse-ending World Series championship in 2016. For the 2021 season with Chicago, he compiled a 0.267 batting average with 18 home runs and 51 RBIs.
