Oliver Ekman-Larsson, Coyotes Star, Traded to Canucks in Major Trade

Just days before the NHL Free Agency Period (Wednesday, July 28) is set to begin, it appears that one lucky team received a star player. Coyotes Insider Craig Morgan first reported that Arizona has traded D Oliver Ekman-Larsson and RW Conor Garland to the Vancouver Canucks. The Coyotes will receive the following in return from Vancouver: LW Loui Eriksson, LW Antoine Roussel, and C Jay Beagle. The Canucks will also send the following draft picks to Arizona: #9 overall pick in 2021 NHL Draft (RW Dylan Guenther), 2022 2nd Round Selection, and 2023 7th Round Pick.

Why Did the Coyotes Trade Oliver Ekman-Larsson?

Arizona decided to trade the defenseman due to the possibility of clearing some space for the team’s salary cap. Recently, the Coyotes parted ways with Rick Tocchet as head coach and replaced him with Andre Tourigny. Meanwhile, the Canucks acquired the defenseman in order to bolster their defense rotation. With Ekman-Larsson in the fold for the Canucks, he will join forces with Vancouver’s top players like Elias Pettersson and Quinn Hughes. Oliver Ekman-Larsson will, however, not become a free agent until after the 2026 season. With that in mind, it appears that free agency was not a factor to the trade becoming a reality.

What Was His Tenure with Arizona Like?

Oliver Ekman-Larsson has spent his entire career with the Coyotes dating back to the 2010-2011 season. He guided Arizona to two playoff appearances, including the 2012 Western Conference Finals. Ekman-Larsson is the all-time franchise leader in points by a defenseman (388 points). For the 2020-2021 season with the Coyotes, he scored 3 goals along with 21 assists (24 points).
