Columbus Sends Nick Foligno to Toronto in 3-Team Deal
Nick Foligno, Blue Jackets Captain, Traded to Maple Leafs in 3-Team Deal
Just a day before the NHL Trade Deadline was set to expire, it appeared that one lucky team received a star player. Frank Seravalli of TSN first reported that the Columbus Blue Jackets have traded Captain Nick Foligno to the Toronto Maple Leafs. As part of the three-team deal, Foligno was first dealt to the San Jose Sharks in exchange for RW Stefan Noesen. Columbus then traded Noesen to Toronto in exchange for a 2021 1st round pick and a 2022 4th round selection. San Jose shortly dealt Foligno to the Maple Leafs in exchange for a 2021 4th round draft pick. The 3-team deal was made in order to make his plan financially stable.
Why Did the Blue Jackets Trade Nick Foligno?
Columbus decided to trade Foligno because of the team’s rebuilding efforts. The Blue Jackets also traded D David Savard to the Lightning as part of a 3-team deal with the Red Wings. Meanwhile, the Maple Leafs acquired Foligno to bolster the team’s offensive core along with Auston Matthews, Joe Thornton, and John Tavares.
What Was His Tenure with Columbus Like?
Nick Foligno was acquired from the Ottawa Senators back in 2012. Three years later, Foligno became the 6th team captain in franchise history. He guided Columbus to five playoff appearances, including the team’s upset first round series victory vs. Tampa Bay in 2019. For the 2020-2021 season with the Blue Jackets, Foligno scored seven goals along with nine assists (16 points).
