Who Are the Charlotte Checkers? What League Do They Play in?

With the American Hockey League (AHL) season underway, the Charlotte Checkers are ready to drop the puck! The Checkers are an AHL Team affiliate of the Florida Panthers. In addition, they play in the Atlantic Division for the Eastern Conference. Charlotte has been a farm team for the Panthers since 2020. The franchise previously partnered with the Carolina Hurricanes (2010-2020). The Checkers won the Calder Cup in 2019 when the team defeated the Chicago Wolves in five games. Charlotte’s team was formerly known as the Albany River Rats (New York: 1993-2010) until its relocation to North Carolina.

The Checkers have been playing their home games at Bojangles’ Coliseum since the team moved there in 2015. Speaking of Bojangles’ Coliseum, the 8,500-capacity venue is about a 10-minute drive from Downtown Charlotte (home of the NBA’s Hornets, NFL’s Panthers, and Triple-A Baseball’s Knights). The official mascot for the Checkers is Chubby the Polar Bear.
