The History of BYU Cougars Football at LaVell Edwards Stadium
With the College Football Season around the corner, the BYU Cougars are ready for kick-off! The men in White and Blue have been playing at LaVell Edwards Stadium since the mid-1960’s. Speaking of LaVell Edwards Stadium, the venue can hold at least 60,000 fans in attendance. The Cougars football venue is about a 50-minute drive from Salt Lake City (home of the Utah Utes, NBA’s Utah Jazz, and Triple-A Baseball’s Salt Lake Bees). LaVell Edwards Stadium is also located on the Brigham Young University campus. The school’s football stadium is named after BYU Head Coach LaVell Edwards (1972-2000; led BYU to 1984 National Championship).
Since its opening, the BYU Cougars football venue has witnessed some of the greatest college football players and coaches in history. Those players are the following: Kalani Sitake (head coach), QB Zach Wilson, QB Ty Detmer (Heisman Winner), WR Cody Hoffman, RB Jamaal Williams, Bronco Mendenhall (head coach), QB Steve Young, and many more! The men in White and Blue last won a National Championship in 1984. Also, the Cougars are currently an Independent football program (a team that doesn’t play in an assigned conference/division). BYU recently won the 2020 Boca Raton Bowl vs. UCF Knights.
