The History of Cincinnati Basketball at Fifth Third Arena
With the College Basketball Season around the corner, the Bearcats are ready for tip-off! The men in red and black have been playing at Fifth Third Arena since the late-1980’s. Speaking of Fifth Third Arena, the venue can hold at least 12,000 fans in capacity. The Bearcats basketball venue is about a 10-15 minute drive from Downtown Cincinnati (home of the MLB’s Reds, NFL’s Bengals, and ECHL Hockey’s Cyclones). The basketball building is also located on the school’s campus very close to Nippert Stadium (football).
The arena was previously known as the Myrl H. Shoemaker Center from 1989 until 2005. In addition, the venue underwent renovations in 2018 that saw improved concourses and modified seats. For men’s basketball, the Bearcats last reached the NCAA Tournament in 2019. Meanwhile, the women’s squad recently played in the NCAA tournament in 2003. The men’s program took part in the March Madness nine times since 2010, while the women’s team made zero such appearances during that span.
