The History of Army Football at Michie Stadium
With the College Football Season underway, the Black Knights are ready for kick-off! The men in black and gold have been playing at Michie Stadium since the mid-1920’s. Speaking of Michie Stadium, the venue can hold at least 35,000 fans in capacity. The Black Knights football venue is about a 1.5-hour drive from New York City (home of the MLB’s Yankees/Mets, NHL’s Rangers, and NBA’s Knicks). Michie Stadium is also about a 2.0-hour drive from Scranton, PA (home of AHL Hockey’s Scranton.WB Penguins and Minor League Baseball’s Scranton/WB RailRiders). The football building is even located on the school’s campus not far from the Hudson River.
The venue was named in honor of alumni Dennis Michie, who was responsible for bringing the Army football program to life. Also, the university recently announced renovation plans that include an updated east stand and new premium seating. For the Black Knights program, the team currently plays in the independent system (no conference nor divisions). In fact, Army has played in six college bowl games since 2010. Believe it or not, the National Hockey League considered having the 2018 Winter Classic at Army’s football venue. However, that game was awarded to Citi Field in New York (Mets’ ballpark).
