With the Minor League Baseball Season (MiLB) underway, the Amarillo Sod Poodles (based in Amarillo, TX) are ready to play ball! The Sod Poodles are a Double-A franchise of the Arizona Diamondbacks. Also, they play in the South Division for the Double-A Central League. The Sod Poodles have been an affiliate for the Dbacks since 2021.
The Amarillo franchise previously partnered with the San Diego Padres (2019-2020) before joining Arizona. Also, the Sod Poodles were formerly known as the San Antonio Missions (not to be confused with the current incarnation of the Padres’ farm team) before relocating to Amarillo in 2019. Sod Poodles are pretty much the same thing as prairie dogs, but with an Amarillo twist.
Where do the Amarillo Sod Poodles Play their Home Games? Who is the Official Mascot?
The Sod Poodles have been playing their home games at Hodgetown Stadium since 2002. Speaking of Hodgetown Stadium, the 6,500-capacity ballpark is located in Downtown Amarillo (which is about a 3.5-hour drive from Midland, home of the RockHounds of Double-A Baseball). The ballpark was named after former Amarillo Mayor from the 1970’s Jerry Hodge, who was responsible for getting the Sod Poodles to Texas. The team’s official mascot is Ruckus the Sod Poodle.
