The History of Northwestern Wildcats Football at Ryan Field

With the College Football Season around the corner, the Northwestern Wildcats are ready for kick-off! The men in Purple and White have been playing at Ryan Field since the mid-1920’s. Speaking of Ryan Field, the venue can hold at least 45,000 fans in attendance. The Wildcats’ football venue is about a 30-40 minute drive from Chicago (home of the MLB’s Cubs/White Sox, NHL’s Blackhawks, NBA’s Bulls, and NFL’s Bears). Ryan Field is also located just a couple miles from the Northwestern University campus (which lies near Lake Michigan). The school’s football stadium was named after former Northwestern Board Chairman Patrick G. Ryan (who donated funds for the university’s athletics program).

Since its opening, the Wildcats football venue has witnessed some of the greatest college football players and coaches in history. Those players are the following: Pat Fitzgerald (head coach), RB Darnell Autry (Heisman Finalist), QB Otto Graham, ST Steve Tasker, Randy Walker (head coach), and many more! The men in Purple and White last won a Conference Title in 2000 (shared). Recently, the Wildcats played in two Big Ten Championship Games in 2018 and 2020 (lost to Ohio State on both occasions). Since 2010, Northwestern has played in eight bowl games.
