Here are the facts you never knew about rising Montreal Canadiens goalie Jakub Dobes. He recently led the Habs to the Round 1 victory vs. TB.

#6-Dobes made history in his Stanley Cup playoff debut in 2025

Following the injury of Sam Montembeault in Game 3 of the Eastern Conference Quarterfinals, Dobes came in relief. He helped Montreal notch a 6-3 victory over the Washington Capitals. Therefore, Dobes became the third goalie in franchise history to win in relief in his postseason debut. The other two were Rogie Vachon (1969) and Charlie Hodge (1955).

#5-He played college hockey for Ohio State

He spent two seasons for the Buckeyes and compiled two 20-win records in Columbus. Dobes was named the Big Ten Goaltender of the Year in 2021-2022 and posted a 21-12-2 with a 0.934 save percentage and 2.26 goals allowed average. He also led Ohio State to the 2023 NCAA Regional Final, but lost to the eventual men’s hockey champion Quinnipiac 4-1. It was the first time the Buckeyes won a postseason game since the 2017-2018 season.

#4-Dobes made his professional debut before college

After graduating from high school in St. Louis, he stayed in the midwest and suited up for the Topeka Pilots (2018-2020) and Omaha Lancers (2019-2021). Dobes took Omaha to the 2021 U.S. Hockey League Playoffs and posted a 0.923 save percentage in two postseason games.

#3-He was with the Canadiens’ system for 6 years

Dobes was a 5th round selection (136th overall) in the 2020 NHL Player Draft. He would spend the next couple of years playing for Topeka, Omaha, and Ohio State before joining Montreal’s AHL farm team (Laval Rocket) in 2023.

#2-Dobes is from Czech Republic

The Ostrava native lived in his original country for sixteen years before moving to St. Louis in 2017. Dobes was a part of the Blues’ youth hockey program before turning pro.

#1-He recorded his 1st shutout in his NHL debut

On December 28, 2024, Jakub Dobes was recalled from the Laval Rocket to make his big league debut. He faced 34 shots and he stopped all of them against the then-defending Stanley Cup champion Florida Panthers 4-0. Dobes is the 4th goalie in Canadiens history to record a shutout in his NHL debut. The other three were Yann Danis (2005), Wayne Thomas (1972), and Bob Perreault (1955).
