The History of Tampa Bay Rays Baseball in St. Petersburg

With the Major League Baseball (MLB) Season underway, the Tampa Bay Rays are ready to play ball! The Rays have been playing at Tropicana Field (St. Petersburg, FL) since 1998. Speaking of Tropicana Field, the venue was the home of the Gasparilla Bowl from 2008 until 2017. The ballpark is the only domed stadium in the big leagues and one of seven venues with a roof (Marlins, Mariners, Astros, Rangers, Dbacks, Brewers).

Tropicana Field is about a 25-30 minute drive from Downtown Tampa (home of the NHL’s Lightning and NFL’s Buccaneers). The ballpark is also not far from Al Lang Stadium in St. Petersburg (home of soccer’s Tampa Bay Rowdies). Since the Rays began play in 1998, the team reached the World Series on two occasions in 2008 and 2020. Tampa also made the playoffs seven times since the team ditched the “Devil Rays” name in 2008.
