The History of San Diego Padres Baseball at Petco Park

With the Major League Baseball (MLB) Season underway, the San Diego Padres are ready to play ball! The Friars have been playing at Petco Park since 2004. Speaking of Petco Park, the venue hosted the 2016 MLB All-Star Game along with the Home Run Derby. The stadium is about a 2.0-hour drive from Los Angeles (home of the MLB’s Dodgers, NHL’s Kings, NBA’s Lakers and Clippers, and WNBA’s Sparks). Petco Park is also about a 1.5-hour drive from Anaheim (home of the MLB’s Angels and NHL’s Ducks).

Since the Padres moved to their current home in 2004, the team reached the playoffs three times: 2005, 2006, 2020. The Friars nearly made the postseason in 2010, but they blew a huge division lead in September to the San Francisco Giants. 2021 turned out to be a historic year for the Padres as RHP Joe Musgrove threw the team’s first no-hitter in franchise history (vs. Rangers). Petco Park is notable for the Historic Western Metal Supply Warehouse building located at left field. The ballpark also has a Padres Hall of Fame Museum located near the Left Field/1st Base Gate.
