The History of Yankees Spring Training at Steinbrenner Field

When the Spring Training Grapefruit League Season comes, the New York Yankees are ready to play ball! The Bronx Bombers have been training at Steinbrenner Field since 1996. Speaking of Steinbrenner Field, the venue is also the home of the Tampa Tarpons of the Florida State League-Single A (formerly Low-A). The Yankees have been calling Tampa their Spring Training home since 1996 after playing in Fort Lauderdale for the previous 33 years. Steinbrenner Field is named after the late Yankees owner George Steinbrenner, who owned the team from the 1970’s until his passing in 2010.

Steinbrenner Field is a 25-30 minute drive from Baycare Ballpark, the Spring Training home of the Philadelphia Phillies in Clearwater. The NYY venue is located right next to Raymond James Stadium, home of the 2020 Super Bowl Champion Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Since the Yankees began Spring Training in 1996, the team won five World Series championships as well as seven American League pennants. New York recently won a World Series title in 2009 by defeating the Phillies in six games. In 2017, OF Aaron Judge won the AL Rookie of the Year. During the 2021 season, RHP Corey Kluber threw a no-hitter vs. Rangers (1st NYY no-no since 1999).
