The History of Orioles Spring Training at Ed Smith Stadium

When the Spring Training Grapefruit League Season comes, the Baltimore Orioles are ready to play ball! The Orioles have been training at Ed Smith Stadium since 2010. Ed Smith Stadium was previously the spring training home for the Chicago White Sox (1989-1997) and Cincinnati Reds (1998-2009). The Orioles have trained in Sarasota before from 1989 to 1991 before playing spring ball in St. Petersburg and then Fort Lauderdale. The ballpark is about a 10-15 minute drive from LECOM Park, the Spring Training site for the Pittsburgh Pirates.

Since the Orioles came to the stadium in 2010, the team made three playoff appearances as well as an AL East Division title and ALCS appearance in 2014. Former O’s Skipper Buck Showalter won the AL Manager of the Year in 2014. Seven years later (2021), John Means threw a no-hitter vs. Mariners (1st Orioles no-no since 1991 combined effort). The venue is named after Ed Smith, who founded the Sarasota Sports Committee after he spent time being a member of the Chamber of Commerce. In fact, there is a plaque of Ed Smith on the right side wall located in the home plate entrance.
