Full Story on John Tortorella Being Fired as Columbus Blue Jackets Head Coach
With John Tortorella gone, now is the time for the Columbus Blue Jackets to make a list of top candidates. In fact, the recognizable applicants could be qualified to become the team’s new head coach for the 2021-2022 Season. Columbus will not retain Tortorella as head coach after five seasons and a 227-116-54 record (13-18 in the playoffs). The Blue Jackets finished in last place in the Central Division (18-26-12 with 36 points) for the 2020-2021 campaign. Tortorella becomes the third head coach to be fired this season after Claude Julien (Canadiens) and Ralph Kruger (Sabres).
John Tortorella’s Career with Columbus
John Tortorella led the Blue Jackets to four playoff appearances, including the team’s upset first round series victory vs. President’s Trophy winner Tampa Bay Lightning in 2019. Despite the number of postseason appearances, Columbus has never advanced past the second round in franchise history.
Before coming to Columbus in 2015, he was the head coach for the following teams: Lightning (2000-2008), Rangers (2009-2013), Canucks (2013-2014), and Blue Jackets (2016-2021). He guided the Lightning to a Stanley Cup championship in 2004. In fact, Tortorella guided the Rangers to the Eastern Conference Finals in 2012. New York went on to lose to the Devils in six games.
