The University of Florida Gators are one of the most popular college teams in America. In program history, they have won three national championships in 1996, 2006, and 2008. Also, the Gators club has won three Southeastern Conference (SEC) titles outright since the 21st century. Another thing to point out is that Florida has three Heisman Trophy winners: QBs Steve Spurrier (1966), Danny Wuerffel (1996), and Tim Tebow (2007). Pete Alonso (Baseball)

  • Profile: Infielder for the New York Mets (MLB: 2019-Present)
  • Connection: The 2019 NL Rookie of the Year played college baseball for three seasons for the Florida Gators (2014-2016). In fact, he led the UF club to the College World Series in 2015 and 2016. Alonso also guided Florida to the 2015 SEC Tournament title. For his career, the two-time Home Run Derby champion batted 0.316 with 23 home runs and 124 runs batted in

Abby Wambach (Soccer)

  • Profile: U.S. Women’s Soccer Player (2001-2015)
  • Connection: The two-time Olympian played college soccer for the UF program during the late 1990’s. In fact, Wambach won a national championship in 1998 when the Gators defeated the North Carolina Tar Heels. Following her college career, she went on to win two Gold Medals in USA Women’s Soccer (2012 London Olympics and 2004 Athens Games). 

David Ross (Baseball)

  • Profile: Manager for Chicago Cubs (2020-Present) & Former Catcher
  • Connection: The Two-Time World Series winner spent only one season with the Gators baseball program (1998). Following his transfer from Auburn, the former catcher was able to lead Florida to a College World Series appearance in 1998. During the pandemic, Ross gave advice to the Gators coaches in terms of how to cope with a season full of uncertainty. 

Ryan Lochte (Swimmer)

  • Profile: Olympic Swimmer (2004-Present)
  • Connection: The three-time Olympian joined UF for the men’s swimming team (2004-2007). Lochte won multiple SEC and national championships in various categories during the course of his college career. For his professional tenure, he won at least one gold medal during the following events: 2004 Athens Olympics, 2008 Beijing Games, and 2012 London Olympics. 

Chipper Jones (Baseball)

Harrison Bader (Baseball)

  • Profile: Outfielder for Cardinals and Yankees (MLB: 2017-Present)
  • Connection: He played college baseball for the Northern Florida-based university during the 2010’s. The 2021 Gold Glove recipient led the Gators to a College World Series berth during the 2015 season. Bader also took UF to three NCAA Tournament appearances during his time in Gainesville. For his career, the longtime Cardinal batted 0.313 with 20 home runs and 112 runs batted in

Anthony DeSclafani (Baseball)

  • Profile: Starting Pitcher for Marlins, Reds & Giants (MLB: 2014-Present)
  • Connection: The longtime Reds ace played three seasons for the Gators men’s baseball team (2009-2011). Most importantly, DeSclafani guided UF to the 2011 College World Series Finals (lost to South Carolina Gamecocks). Also to keep in mind is that the pitcher led the Gators to two College World Series berths (2010 & 2011) and one SEC Tournament title (2011). For his career with UF, DeSclafani compiled a 13-9 record with a 5.36 earned run average and 115 strikeouts

Even though he never went to the Gainesville college, the wrestler would yell “WOOOOOO!” if he saw anyone doing the Gator chomp.
