The Ohio State Buckeyes are one of the most popular college teams in America. They have won eight national championships all-time in program history: 1942, 1954, 1957, 1961, 1968, 1970, 2002, and 2014. Also, the Buckeyes have won six Big Ten Conference titles since the 2009 season. Another thing to point out is that Ohio State has played in three Rose Bowls and eight Fiesta Bowls since the 21st century. OF Bryce Harper (Phillies)

  • Profile: Played for Nationals and Phillies in MLB Baseball (2012-Present)
  • Connection: His wife, Kayla Varner, played women’s soccer for the Buckeyes after transferring from BYU. 
  • In 2018, Bryce Harper was a guest game picker for ESPN’s College Gameday. With the show set Inside Ohio Stadium, the baseball star sported an Ohio State red jacket and a “Block O” hat. Despite going to the pros out of high school, Harper is a Buckeyes fan due to a strong family connection. 

Jack Nicklaus (Golf)

  • Profile: Professional Golfer (1962-2005)
  • Connection: The Columbus native played College Golf for the Buckeyes in the late 1950’s and won a National Championship in 1961. Nicklaus even got the honor of “dotting-the-I” on the Ohio Stadium’s field (a tradition normally given to band members). However, he dropped out from Ohio State due to one of the instructors not letting him play in Australia
  • There is a Jack Nicklaus Museum located on the Ohio State campus. The building is close to other school sports venues like the Bill Davis Baseball Stadium, Woody Hayes Athletic Center, and Schumaker Complex.

  • Profile: Track Runner who had a Successful Olympics at 1936 Berlin Games
  • Connection: Owens competed in College Track for the Buckeyes during the 1930’s. Today, there is a track stadium on the Ohio State campus named after him called the Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium. It is located behind the Woody Hayes Athletic Center and Schumaker Complex. 

Nick Swisher (Baseball)

  • Profile: Outfielder for Yankees, White Sox, Indians, Athletics, and Braves (2004-2015)
  • Connection: He played college baseball at Ohio State for three seasons. He won the 2000 Big Ten Freshman of the Year award. 
  • Today, the Buckeyes’ Men’s Baseball Stadium is Named in His Honor: Nick Swisher Field at Bill Davis Stadium.

  • Connection: His father was a music teacher at Ohio State University for quite some time before the family moved to Montana. To this day, Simmons roots with the Buckeye Nation every fall season. 

Richard Lewis (Actor)

Patricia Heaton (Actress)

  • Profile: Screen Actress Best Remembered for “Everybody Loves Raymond” and “The Middle.”
  • Connection: She is an Ohio State graduate with a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Drama. In 2019, Heaton invited the members of the Los Angeles Buckeye alumni to a live taping of her show (Carol’s Second Act on CBS). However, the show was canceled after airing only one season.

  • Connection: He has a piano that is decorated with football helmet stickers and a sign that says “Go Bucks.” That being said, Legend never went to school at Ohio State because he graduated from the University of Pennsylvania. Fortunately, he still shows support for Buckeye Nation on social media. 

Gary LeVox (Country Music)

  • Profile: Co-Founder for Rascal Flatts
  • Connection: LeVox is an Ohio State graduate (degree unknown) and a Columbus native. At one time, Rascal Flatts performed the National Anthem before the Buckeyes game at Ohio Stadium.

George Steinbrenner (Sports Owner)

  • Profile: Owner for the New York Yankees (1973-2010)
  • Connection: He went to Ohio State University following his military service in the Air Force in the 1950s. “The Boss” graduated from the school with a Master’s Degree in Physical Education. The late Yankees owner’s presence can be felt to this day since he dedicated the school band center in honor of his wife (Joan Zieg Steinbrenner Band Center). 
  • Believe it or not, the Yankees’ Triple-A Team was the Columbus Clippers (based in Ohio) from 1979 until 2006.
