The Oklahoma Sooners are one of the most popular college teams in America. In the 21st century, they have won seven national championships (with the recent one in 2000). Also, the OU football program has played in the College Football Playoff four times since the new edition’s debut in 2015. Another thing to point out is that Oklahoma has won eight Big 12 Conference titles since the 2010’s.   • Profile: Starting Pitcher for the Colorado Rockies & Texas Rangers (2015-Present)
  • Connection: He played college baseball for two seasons for the OU Sooners (2012-2013). In fact, Gray compiled a 18-7 record with a 2.31 Earned Run Average (E.R.A.) and 252 strikeouts. Also to keep in mind is that the pitcher was part of the Sooners squad that played in multiple NCAA Tournament appearances (2012-2013). 

Garrett Richards (Baseball)

  • Profile: Starting Pitcher for Los Angeles Angels, San Diego Padres, Boston Red Sox & Texas Rangers (2011-Present)
  • Connection: The longtime Angels thrower spent three seasons with the Sooners baseball program (2008-2010). Richards was a reliever for the first two campaigns before joining the starting rotation for the 2010 season. For his tenure, the pitcher compiled an 11-6 record with a 6.42 E.R.A. and 127 punchouts. Richards also played in the 2010 College World Series. 

Jason Bartlett (Baseball)

  • Profile: Infielder for the Minnesota Twins, Tampa Bay Rays, and San Diego Padres (2004-2012, 2014)
  • Connection: He played college baseball for the Norman-based university during the late 1990’s. In addition, Bartlett guided the Sooners to the 1998 NCAA Tournament appearances. The former shortstop had some highlight moments in his MLB career, as he was a part of the Rays team that went to the 2008 World Series (lost to Philadelphia Phillies in five games).

  • Connection: Munn is an alumni for the University of Oklahoma via a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Journalism. The Oklahoma City native was also seen wearing Sooner football apparel during the fall seasons. She also occasionally wears OU clothing as part of the annual College Colors Day. 

Dari Nowkhah (National Sports TV Anchor)

  • Profile: Lead Anchor for ESPN’s SEC Network (2014-Present)
  • Connection: The Tulsa origin is a graduate from the Norman (OK) college, which is something many SEC football fans do not expect. In fact, Nowkhah confirmed his Boomer Sooner support on his Twitter page. The anchor may be an SEC fan on the outside, but he bleeds OU Sooner red on the inside. 

Rick Bayless (TV Chef)

  • Profile: National Chef & Restaurant Owner Seen on “Top Chef Masters,” “Iron Chef America,” and “Mexico: One Plate at a Time.”
  • Connection: He earned his Bachelor’s Degree from the University of Oklahoma during the 1970’s. The Oklahoma City native is related to Skip Bayless, who appeared on Fox’s “Skip and Shannon: Disputed” and previously took part on ESPN’s “First Take.” Anyway, in 2019, Rick Bayless received the school’s Distinguished Alumni Award and answered questions in a specialized panel. 

Joe Simpson (MLB TV Commentator)

  • Profile: MLB Color Commentator for the Atlanta Braves (1992-Present)
  • Connection: The Purcell origin was an infielder for the Oklahoma Sooner baseball team for three seasons in the early 1970’s. During his tenure, Simpson batted 0.269 with 2 home runs and 55 runs batted in. In addition, the player-turned broadcaster led the OU program to two College World Series appearances in 1972 and 1973. 

Stacey Dales (National TV Sports Host)

  • Profile: National Reporter for the NFL Network (2009-Present)
  • Connection: She spent four years playing women’s college basketball for the Sooners (1998-2002). Also, Dales led the program to the 2002 National Championship Game (lost to UConn) and was the #3 pick in that year’s WNBA draft. Even though she now focuses on professional football, her roots still belong to the Boomer Sooner Nation.
