Why do Celebrities Support the UW Huskies Football Team?

The University of Washington Huskies are one of the most popular college teams in America. In its program history, the men in purple and gold last won a National Championship in 1991 vs. Michigan. Since the 2010’s, the Huskies won two Pac-12 Conference titles (2016 & 2018). Washington also reached the College Football Playoffs during the 2016 season, where they lost to Alabama in the Peach Bowl. 

Another thing to point out is that the Seattle-based school has never had a Heisman Trophy winner in program history. Tim Lincecum (Baseball)

  • Profile: Starting Pitcher for San Francisco Giants and Los Angeles Angels (2007-2016)
  • Connection: The 3-Time World Series champion spent three seasons with the men in purple and gold (2004-2006). Lincecum guided Washington to the NCAA Tournament in 2004. For his college tenure in Seattle, he compiled a 30-13 record with a 2.82 earned run average and 491 strikeouts. 

Nate Robinson (Basketball)

  • Profile: Point Guard for Knicks, Celtics, Thunder, Warriors, Bulls, Clippers, Nuggets & Pelicans (2005-2015)
  • Connection: The 3-Time NBA Slam Dunk winner spent three seasons with the Washington basketball program (2002-2005). In addition, Robinson led the Huskies to two NCAA Tournament appearances (2004 & 2005). He even took Washington to the Sweet 16 appearance in 2005. For his time in Seattle, Robinson scored 14.4 points per game along with 3.9 rebounds per game and 3.2 assists per game. 

Jake Lamb (Baseball)

  • Profile: Infielder for Diamondbacks, Athletics, White Sox, Dodgers & Angels (2014-Present)
  • Connection: The 2017 All-Star played two seasons with the UW program (2011-2012). Unfortunately, Lamb was unable to lead the Huskies to any NCAA Tournament appearances nor Pac-12 Conference wins. For his collegiate career, he batted 0.316 with 6 home runs and 56 runs batted in. 

Markelle Fultz (Basketball)

  • Profile: Point Guard for Philadelphia 76ers & Orlando Magic (2017-Present)
  • Connection: The former #1 pick in the NBA Draft spent only one season with the men in purple and yellow (2016-2017). However, Fultz failed to get Washington to the NCAA Tournament in Spring 2017. For his time in the Pacific Northwest, he scored 23.2 points per game along with 5.7 rebounds per game and 5.9 assists per game.

Joel McHale (Actor)

  • Profile: Screen Actor Best Known for “Community” and “The Soup.”
  • Connection: The Mercer Island native graduated from University of Washington with a Bachelor’s Degree in History during the mid-1990’s. Believe it or not, McHale actually played tight end for the Huskies football team despite not playing a single game. The Community star attended the 2019 Rose Bowl in California, where Washington lost to Ohio State 28-23.
